Whenever I speak to groups about personal preparedness, I always mention how you being prepared is a critical piece of the puzzle! In an emergency or disaster, we know from past experiences that first responder’s will be overwhelmed and short handed. Hence why we talk about personal preparedness and frankly why we play this game. But personal preparedness is only one piece of that puzzle.
It’s usually neighbors helping neighbors in the first minutes, hours, and even days after a major disaster. We love programs like CERT (Community Emergency Response Teams) which teaches individuals skills to help each other in an organized manner. Having some extra knowledge in how to helping others, including your own family is great but have you considered how getting involved can make an impact outside your own circle.
Now of course this month is National Preparedness Month, and when I talk about getting involved, the first thing that comes to mind is volunteering with a group that assists with public safety or emergency response. However, I have learned that just as everyone describes what an emergency is to them differently, volunteering needs to be something we are passionate about where we feel we can make a difference.
